Alvin Ziegler Carson, son of Henry Clay and Margaret Ziegler Carson, was born Feb. 13, 1884. His death occurred on Jan. 11, 1978, at AlaFern Nursing Home in Russell after a period of failing health. His age was 93 years, 10 months, 28 days. Mr. Carson lived his early life in Posey Co., Indiana, received his basic education there, and in 1905 moved to Lucas to live with relatives. About a year later he moved to Russell, KS, where he met and married Zelda Himes on Sept 14, 1910. This union was blessed with four daughters, Madge, Melba, Doris Dee and Alene.

Mr. Carson lived the rest of his life in the Russell community and operated his own barber shop for 35 years on North Main St. During his nearly 50 years as a barber, he worked with numerous helpers, and eventually sold the shop at the time he retired. After the death of his wife, Zelda, on Feb. 4, 1963, he continued to make his home at 228 W. 7th St. until his health failed. After a period of hospitalizations he moved to the AlaFern Nursing Home in 1974.

He was member of the Methodist Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was an active member of the Russell Fire Dept. over 30 years, from May 29, 1912 until Oct. 28, 1942. He was an honorary member since that time, making a 65 year tenure of service. At the time he retired from the dept., the present fire chief, G.E. Laubhan, assumed his position on the force.

Those who preceded him in death were his wife, Zelda, his daugher, Doris Dee Carson, who died in July of 1958, one brother and three sisters. Funeral services were Jan. 14, from Pohlman's Memorial Chapel, Rev. Ted Bronleewe officiating. Soloist was E. H. Sewell, organist was Mrs. Eileen Vladar. Casket bearers were Roy Dugan, Waldo Landis, Martin Alley, Leonard Shannon, Leo Leerskov, and Rolland Berggren. Interment in the Russell City Cem. Pohlman's Mortuary was in charge.
