Clippings.........May 10,1993...........George Baxter, 85, Russell, died May 6, 1993 at Russell Regional Hospital. He has born Sept. 14, 1907, near Gorham, the son of James Edward and Mary Jane (Fotherby) Baxter. On Dec. 26, 1934 he married Vivian Nichols at Manhattan. She died Feb. 27, 1990.
Survivors are: son, Jim of Winter Park, FL; daughters, Virginia Wright of Richmond, KY; and Bette Huegel of Denver; 2 grandchildren.

He returned to his home town in 1939 to teach at Russell High School. He was the head football coach and led his team to an undefeated season in 1941. During his 42-years of teaching and coaching at RHS, he taught business courses and coached teams of golf and other sports. His 1955 golf team won the state championship.
He met and married Vivian Nichols on Dec. 26, 1934 in Manhattan. They had and are survived by their three children:Virginia, Jim and Bette. She predeceased George by three years.
Among his many activities and experiences, George was a football star at Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, and subsequently inducted into Wesleyan's Sports Hall of Fame. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1934 through 1945. He was a life member of American Legion Post 99. He served on the board of Directors of the Kansas State Teachers Assoc. He was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church; Russell Elks Lodge; and a past president of the Russell Rotary Club.
George Baxter's students and players remember him as fair but demanding. To him, "the fundamentals" were all-important as one prepared for a class, a game, or life. On the other hand, his standards for them never exceeded those he imposed upon himself.
Beyond the discipline, however, George saw the people. Each of his charges was significant as a person, and he probably remembered virtually all of them individually the rest of his life. It is not likely that many of them forgot him either.
George loved this community and the people in it. He had a kind word for everyone, and he also possessed the all-too-rare capacity to see their virtues beyond their faults.
George Baxter's long and rewarding life came to an end on May 6, 1993, in Russell at the age of 85 years, 7 months, and 22 days.
