Catherine Mary (Kate) was born in Askeaton, County Limerick, Ireland, in 1880, the youngest of eleven children of Thomas and Mary Holland nee Boyce. She was still at home in Ireland for the census of 1901, and still living in the family home in January 1903 when her father died as her name is recorded on his death certificate as the informant. It seems she followed her siblings to New York about 1905 and married John Bernard Coyne, a fellow Irish immigrant, a week before Christmas in 1907 at St Peter’s Church in Troy. They had six children, four sons and two daughters between 1908 and 1917 when her husband, John, met with a tragic accident while working on the railroad. He slipped and fell under a moving train. He suffered severe trauma and died as a result. Suddenly widowed, Kate found times were hard and she would have been grateful for the support of family and friends as she raised her family alone. Second son, Patrick Joseph had died in 1911 aged two and John, the eldest, was nine when his father was killed, Frank just six, Kay four, Peggy two and Tommy just a baby. More than fifteen years after John’s death, Catherine remarried, on 2 Dec 1932 to a widower, Jeremiah Leonard Hurley. His first wife, Julia, had died five years earlier and they had three daughters, the youngest was 18 when her father remarried, while Catherine had just her two youngest at home. However, this marriage was not a happy one and they parted after a short time. Catherine lived at various addresses in Troy and her last home was at 566 River Street. Catherine died in June 1964 after a short illness and was survived by two of her sons, two daughters, thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. A Requiem High Mass was offered at St Peter’s Church before interment at St Peter’s Cemetery.
