Roman Catholic Cardinal. He was the last surviving Cardinal to have been elevated to that rank by Pope John XXIII. He was considered an enlightened Archbishop for opening dialogues with members of other faiths, and with political figures. He participated in three papal elections (Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II). He is thought to have been a driving force in the nomination and election of John Paul II. From 1956 to 1985, Cardinal König served as the Archbishop of Vienna. He was insturmental in helping to bring Cardinal Mindszenty of Hungary to safety. During the Second Vatican Council, he pushed for better relations with members of the Jewish Faith and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. Born in 1905, the oldest of nine childrenm he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He spoke several languages, including Russian, English, and Latin. He was also able to read ancient Syriac, Persian, and Hebrew. Cardinal König was ordained as a Priest in the 1930s.
