MRS. ACCARDO, TONY'S MOM, DIES AT AGE 85.
Mrs. Mary Accardo, the 85-year-old mother of gangster Anthony (big Tuna) Accardo, died yesterday in the Oak Park Hospital.
She had been admitted to the hospital earlier in the day. Of her six children reared on the west side of Chicago, only Anthony became familiar to the public. Accardo rose thru the ranks of the crime syndicate beginning as a bootlegger and bodyguard to Al (Scarface) Capone. Prior to his conviction 1960 for income tax evasion--which was reversed by the United States Court of Appeals--he had been arrested only three times, all for disorderly conduct, and spent only one night in jail.
In addition to Anthony, Mrs. Accardo is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Meyers, Mrs. Martha Senese, and Mrs. Mary Simonelli; two sons, Martin and John; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
