Mabel Record Jan 27 1939
Monday, January 23, the Elstad church was filled to capacity by relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Nelson and family, who on that day had the very sad mission of placing their beloved son and brother, Norman, amongst the many that are already in God's acre of the Elstad congregation.
Norman Lewellyn Nelson was born November 16, 1921. He was confirmed in the Elstad church August 9th, 1936.
He, as well as many others, were taken sick about six weeks ago, when a siege of measles and the flu was quite prevalent. About two weeks ago he was removed to the Lutheran hospital at La Crosse for an examination. There it was found that he was suffering from a tumor on the brain. They were advised to go to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, where there are surgeons who have this particular trouble as their specialty. He was taken there, but he died before the operation could be performed. A post mortem operation was performed, and it was found that he had a deep seated tumor on the brain.
He suffered many and severe pains the last two weeks, but he was a very patient sufferer. When told that an attempt would be made to operate, and that it was doubtful whether it would be successful, he was satisfied to pass on. The young man seemed to have no fear at the thought of death.
The large audience testified to the high esteem he was held by all those who knew him. Many beautiful flowers adorned his casket, and nearly $50.00 was given as memorials to Christian Education and Missions.
Four of his confirmation classmates, Syrald Bremseth, Donald Lawstuen, Gordon Gullickson, Paul Abrahamson and the twin brothers Donald and Ronald Johnson, carried the casket.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Nelson; two sisters, Vernice (Mrs. Miles Hoff), and Ardys, at home; one brother, Ordell, at home. Also the following from this vicinity: his grandfather, Lars Amdahl, and the following uncles and aunts: J. L. Amdahl, Bernt Amdahl, Mrs. Luther Kingstad and Mrs. Hjalmer Sand; also ten cousins.
