Writer. He attended Catholic school and was expected to join his family's laundry business. Instead he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 after lying about his age. Unfortunately, during three years in the service, he became addicted to heroin. After discharge from the military, he turned to crime to support his habit. Sentenced to Michigan's Jackson penitentiary, he began to write westerns. After reading Robert Beck's autobiography, he turned to a crime genre. His first book "Dopefiend" was published in 1971. This was following immediately by fifteen novels over the next five years to finance his ongoing drug habit. Four books in his Kenyatta series were published under the name Al C. Clark. In October of 1974, he and his common-law wife were discovered shot to death in their house. Motive and the identity of the killer remain unknown. Although his work did not receive much attention during his lifetime, he has become an influencer to hip-hop rap artists. He has sold as least five million books. Two of his books have been adapted into movies "Never Die Alone" and "Crime Partners."
