Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church in Vidalia Sunday at 4:30 p.m. for James I. Palmer, 76, retired merchant, who died at his residence on Parkway Drive, Vidalia at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. O.L. Pedigo, Jr., officiated and burial was in Lakeview Memorial Gardens with Murchison Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were the following nephews: Tully Palmer, Lee Moore, Roy Tyson, Earnest Moore, Marcus Beall and D.C. Palmer.

The active and inactive Board of Deacons formed an honorary escort.

Mr. Palmer was born in Montgomery County on May 22, 1886, the son of Joseph and Martha Fountain Palmer. He had resided in Vidalia for the past nine years, and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Odessa Rogers; five daughters, Mrs. Charlie Tipton, of Dade City, Fla., Mrs. J.W. Graham and Mrs. Ed Dowling, of Douglas, Mrs. John Tipton, of Glenwood and Mrs. James Thompson, of Ailey; two sons, Joe Palmer, of Vidalia, and Aubrey Palmer, of McRae; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Palmer, of Mt. Vernon, Iron Palmer, of Hazlehurst; and two sisters, Mrs. Mazie Beall, of Hazlehurst, and Mrs. Jim O'Conner, of Kibbee.
