A wealthy business man, Godfrey Barnsley built a large manor house known as The Woodlands. In later years, it would be renamed Barnsley Garden.
His wife Julia died before the house was finished. Legend has it that he felt that she was with him, helping him make decisions on completion of the mansion.
He lost much of his fortune during the Civil War.
Decades after his death, the house and grounds fell into ruin. All that remained of the house were the walls and the kitchen house beside it.
In the 1990s, the land was bought. The gardens around the house skeleton were restored, the kitchen turned into a museum, and the land around it turned into an upscale resort known as Barnsley Gardens: https://www.barnsleyresort.com/.
