Brecher, Norma Norma Brecher, 85, died peacefully at home on Feb. 15, 2012, after a graceful 11-month battle with lung cancer. Born in Rock Island, Ill., on Mar. 3, 1926, to Mary and William Snyder, Norma graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in journalism. In 1962, she moved with her husband and children to Israel and, a year later, to London, England. She has lived in and adored Los Angeles since 1969. Norma is survived by children Jane (Larry) Ulman, Ellen (Vic) Zoschak and Michael (Julie) Waxenberg and grandchildren Jonathan Gutstadt, Julie (Paul) Otis, Hannah (Travis) Bean, Claire Waxenberg, Zachary Ulman, Gabriel Ulman, Jeremy Ulman and Daniel Ulman. She is also survived by her sister Goldie Jacobson, numerous friends and relatives and her devoted cat Charley. She is predeceased by her second husband Irving Brecher, stepdaughter Joanna Giallelis and first husband Maynard Waxenberg. Norma always liked her scotch neat, her politics passionate and Democratic and her husbands interesting. She was an extraordinary knitter and avid worker of complex crossword puzzles, in ink. She worked fervently on behalf of Hadassah, American Youth Symphony and the League of Women Voters, where she fiercely fought for two campaign finance initiatives. "I want to be remembered as someone who was always pushing the ball uphill," she said. On behalf of Norma, the family would like to thank Oscar Gutierrez, Erlinda Halsey, Rosa Queros and Skirball Hospice for their dedicated and excellent care. Services will be held on Monday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m. at Hillside Memorial Park. Donations may be sent to SOVA (www.jfsla.org/SOVA) or the food bank of your choice. "In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer." -Albert Camus.
