Mrs. Nels Fiske was born June 15, 1869 at Sonnendahl Norway. Sonnendahl is ten Norwegian miles or seventy American miles south of Trondhjem. Mrs. Fiske attended her first Ladies Aid meeting at the age of 18 years at Sonnendahl in 1888. The meetings were held in the homes of the members once a month. They had a little box in which the money was received. Whatever was given was welcome. They all brought their work along. This was sewing, knitting or crocheting, depending on what they were busy with. The work in the aid was for missions. Once a year they had a sale. Everyone brought something to be sold. They did not have a leader or any books. They used what they could find to read out of the morning newspaper. The minister was not able to attend as he lived 2 1/2 Norwegian miles or 17 1/2 American miles away. Six years later they began to organize appointing a leader. Then Mrs. Fiske left Sonnendahl and lived in Rannbue for five years. This was a bigger and newer aid. She then moved back to Trondhjem. At the Ladies Aid at Trondhjem, they made stockings for the children's mission at Christmas. Mrs. Fiske was married at Trondhjem on December 21, 1918. She lived there until 1926 when she came to America, coming to Minnesota, she lived at the Ole Nelson farm where she continued to live and is at the present time. Mrs. Fiske joined the Elstad Ladies Aid when she came to America. She has been an active member helping with many suppers, bazaars, circles, and various occasions. So at the age of 91, Mrs. Fiske has served as a Ladies aid member for 73 years.
This autobiography was read at the 1960 Elstad Life and In Memorium program, May 12 with the following tribute: Saa vil vi take dig Mrs. Fiske for de mange aar som du har varet med og arbeedet for vor kvinde forenning. Vi haaber dise aarene som du har varet medlem har varet til stor hygge and Velsignelse.
