Lieutenant Commander (Retired) Abe Fennell, age 89, peacefully passed away from this life on February 15th, 2012. Abe was born February 11th, 1923 in Jasper, Florida, the first son of Abe P. Fennell and his wife Georgia.

Abe enlisted in the Navy in February 1941. Following Recruit training and Aviation Metalsmith Class "A" School, he was assigned to VP-72 as a flight crew member and maintenance man. From August 1941 thru December 1968 he flew as an air crewman, Bombardier/Navigator and special crew in PBY's, P2V, AJ, A3, and RA3 aircraft accumulating 4704 flight hours. In his capacity as Bombardier/Navigator, Abe and his flight crew won three East Coast Bombing Derbies in 1958, 1961, and 1962.

In 1967, LCDR Fennell assumed responsibility as the "Land and Sea Survival Officer" for the Naval Aviation Schools Command at NAS Pensacola. He established survival exhibits and started a small zoo containing indigenous creatures: raccoons, deer, alligators, and snakes. He and his staff accompanied flight students on three day survival training exercises at Eglin AFB.

During his Schools Command assignment he became an active member of the Navy Golf Team which competed against other service teams. As an accomplished golf player, Abe made 4 hole-in-ones.

Abe retired from the Navy in 1971 after 30 years, 1 month and 20 days of service. He assumed responsibility of running the Osceola Golf Club dining facilities from 1971 to 1973. Abe has been a volunteer member of the Naval Aviation Schools Command Golf Committee since retirement.

Abe's memberships include the Fleet Reserves, MOOA, US Golf Association, Osceola Men's Golf Club, A.C. Reed Golf Club, NRA, and numerous other organizations.

Preceding Abe in death are his parents, siblings, his hunting buddy nephew, Herb Fennell, and stepchildren, Jerry Correll and Donna Prevatte.

Survivors include his wife, Millie Fennell; son, Abe Patrick Fennell III; two daughters, Laverne Bish and Michelle Donaldson; grandchildren, Sheli, Chelsea, Kaitlin, and Todd Prevatte (fiancée Jenifer); adopted daughter, Susan Hadder (Jay); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Monday, February 20, 2012 from 11:30 AM till the service time of 12:30 PM at Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with Dr. Alton Butler officiating and Rev. Ron Pouliot assisting.

Burial will be in Barrancas National Cemetery with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Todd Prevatte, Jay Hadder, Doctor David Perrett, Jim Williams, Herbert Williams and Casey Hinds.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Fennell, Tom Quay, Bill Voss, Roy Ivey, Quinton Trumpore and Colin Pemberton.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to Covenant Hospice 5041 N. 12th Avenue Pensacola, FL 32504.

The family extends their heart-felt thank you to West Florida Hospital 6th floor staff and to Covenant Hospice.
