"I was born Feb 7 1856 on a farm in Letcher county.... In the year 1882 I received an appointment to a Clerkship in the Interior Department in the city of Washington D.C. and entered upon my duties on Sept 22 of that year and held the said position until Feb 28, 1883.... I studied law and attended Lectures of the National Law College in said city but was prevented from graduating owning to the fact that my baby was attacked by fever and I could not take the examination and before another term I had resigned and came home. When I had been home about a year the good people of Letcher County were so urgent in their demands that I consented to become a candidate for the office of County Judge and at the August election 1890 I was elected and held office for four years and am willing that my people shall judge me by my record. I was admitted to the bar as a practicing attorney in June 1892 and have continued to follow it as my business until the present time....(1909)
