Poet. Born in Barnes, South-West London, the younger of the two daughters of Thomas James and Christiana Weller. (Her elder sister, Elizabeth (1846-1933) went on to marry Lieutenant-General Sir William Francis Butler, and is well-known as a painter of battle scenes). Her parents were friends of Charles Dickens, and the girls were brought up in Italy, France and Switzerland. The elder Thompson became a Roman Catholic in 1870, Alice followed her in 1872, Elizabeth converted the next year. Alice published her first volume of verse, "Preludes", in 1875. One sonnet contained in it, "My Heart Shall Be Thy Garden", came to the attention of the literary critic Wilfrid Meynell. A friendship, then a romance, developed between the two writers; and, in 1877, they married, and went on to have eight children. In 1880, they took over a magazine, "The Pen"; this was short-lived, but they edited "The Weekly Register" from 1881 to 1898, and "Merry England", a monthly, from 1883 to 1895. Whilst editing the latter magazine, they received a contribution from Francis Thompson (no relation to Alice.) He became a close friend of the couple and lived with them whilst recovering from his opium addiction. Alice Meynell published eleven volumes of essays, as well as books on Ruskin and St. Mary, but is best remembered for her six volumes of verse. When Tennyson died in 1892, she was considered for the position of Poet Laureate, a post which has never been held by a woman, but the honour was, eventually, awarded to Alfred Austin.
