Queen Regant of Sweden. Wittelsbach Dynasty. Born the youngest child of Carl XI and Ulrica Eleanor the Elder. Her elder brother, Carl XII took the throne following the death of their father, and immediately embroiled the country in the drawn out Nordic Wars, leaving his sister as the royal representative at home. In 1713 she was named regent during the king's absence. In 1715 she married Landgrave Frederick of Hesse-Cassel. Three years later, the death of her brother prompted her to retain the throne despite the fact that succession should have fallen to her elder sister's son. She abdicated in her husband's favor after one year, a move confirmed by the Riksdag. He succeeded as King Frederick. Ulrica Eleanor was to suffer disappointment as the wife of a philandering husband thereafter. Although her husband had entertained many mistresses, in 1734, he became the first king in Swedish history to name an official mistress, in the form of Hedvig Taube, who was granted the title Countess of Hessenstein. The queen largely retired from public life thereafter focusing her attention on religion and charity. Her only forays at court were on the few occasions that she was named as titular regent during her husband's stays abroad. She died after contracting smallpox at age 53.
