Played and lettered on the University of Colorado football team, 1943-1944-his jersey number was 38. President of the University of Colorado System, serving from 1974 to 1980. Under his tenure, the University of Colorado System was established, with campuses in Boulder, Denver, and Colorado Springs, and the Boulder campus' role as a major research institution was enhanced. He served in other administrative posts, including associate dean of faculties and vice president. The teaching aspect of his career at Colorado was as a Professor of Civil Engineering, serving for a time as chairman of the department.
