US Congressman. The fifth of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt's six children, he served in the United States Navy during World War II. Eventually rising to Lieutenant Commander, he was place in command of the "John C. Butler"-class destroyer escort "USS Ulvert M. Moore" (DE-442), which was present in Tokyo Bay, Japan when the Imperial Japanese Forces surrendered to the Allies in September 1945. After the war he was part of a New York City, New York law firm, and was elected in 1949 to represent New York's 20th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1950 to 1955. He later twice unsuccessfully ran for Governor of New York.
