Dr. David Lawrence Brown Jr. of Lake City died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 after a long illness.

A funeral was Sunday, Sept. 7 in the Lake City United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Brown Cemetery.

Born in Florence County on Aug. 20, 1931, Dr. Brown was a son of the late David Lawrence Brown, Sr. and Florence Maybelle Rembert Brown and was married to Kaye McDuffie Brown on Sept. 5, 1959. Dr. Brown was a graduate of McClenaghan High School in Florence, was a graduate of Clemson University and was a graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine ('55). He first practiced with Dr. George Gibson in Florence and served in the United States Air Force Veterinary Corps in Thule, Greenland, and Shaw Air Force Base before coming to Lake City and opening his own practice, Brown Animal Hospital, in 1959, where he served compassionately for 48 years to relieve pain and suffering of animals around the Pee Dee. Dr. Brown was a member of the South Carolina Association of Veterinarians, was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, was a member of the Lake City Rotary Club for 49 years, was treasurer of the local Woodmen of the World chapter, was a member of the Lake City United Methodist Church, was a football coach at The Carolina Academy, and was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Surviving are wife, Kaye McDuffie Brown of the home; two daughters, Dr. Karole B. Parker (Marty) and Mary B. Walker (Chuck), both of Lake City; a brother, Arthur E. Brown Sr. (Rosa Jane) of Mauldin; and six grandsons, Trey, Ken, and Kris Parker, Will and Ben Humphries and Noah Walker and one granddaughter, Carsten Walker, all of Lake City.
