Pfc. Eckhardt is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Eckhardt of Armington, Illinois. Enlisted March 12, 1943 and trained at Camp Pendleton, California.
Beside his parents, he leaves three brothers, Seaman Donald in the Navy, Charles, and Bobby, and three sisters, Mrs. Norma Wiley of Peoria, Miss Marjorie, and Miss Mildred at home.
1st Battalion, 8th Marines was commissioned on April 1, 1940, in San Diego, California and was assigned to the 2nd Marine Brigade. The 2nd Marine Brigade was re-designated February 1, 1941, as 2nd Marine Division. After the outbreak of war, the 8th Marine Regiment with an assortment of other division assets formed the 2nd Marine Brigade and was dispatched to garrison American Samoa.
Joining the 2d Marine Division in New Zealand, the 8th Marines spent several months refitting for operation GALVANIC, the amphibious assault on Tarawa. In 76 hours of some of the bloodiest fighting in American history, the Marines seized that island and opened the door to the Japanese Empire.
