A funeral for Helen Fay Smith of McMinnville was held Monday in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville. The Rev. Jim Peterson of the Lafayette Community Church officiated.
Mausoleum interment was in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.
Mrs. Smith died Oct. 27, 2000, in Oakwood Country Place, McMinnville. She was 80.
She was born March 18, 1920, in Portland, the daughter of Enos and Louella Lewis Bettencourt. She attended Gresham and Parkrose schools. After graduating from Parkrose High School, she moved to Tillamook.
She and Ezra Smith were married Feb. 26, 1940, in Stevenson, Wash.
She moved in 1947 to McMinnville, where she worked for J.C. Penney. She owned and operated Smitty's Drive-In from 1956 to 1959. She then moved to Salem and later lived in Sherwood, Sheridan and Pacific City. After suffering a major stroke in 1993, she moved back to McMinnville.
Mrs. Smith belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved to cook, crochet and knit. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Family members said she also loved to reminisce about the young people who had patronized Smitty's Drive-In.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Luella Cruickshank of Tillamook, Louann Harwood of Newberg and Dianne Lewis of Juneau, Alaska; a son, John Smith of Clackamas; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Larry, in 1999.
