US Representative from Iowa. Graduated from Washington College, Pennsylvania in 1851 and moved to Arkansas, where he taught school. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1857 and moved to Onawa, Monona County, Iowa to start a law firm in 1858. In 1861 he was Monona County Supervisor and served as provost marshal during the Civil War. He was a member of the State House of Representatives in 1863, a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1864, served in the State Senate, 1865 to 1867 and judge of the fourth judicial circuit, 1868 to 1875. He was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, March 4, 1875 to March 3, 1879. He declined to be a candidate for renomination, returned to Onawa served as mayor for several terms and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
