James' origins are uncertain but DNA testing has linked him conclusively to Hugh Hales of Maryland and (later) Ohio. It is believed that the record of a marriage to Esther Scott in Northampton Co., Virginia (1791) refers to James. A county history notes that he was a Revolutionary War veteran in Kentucky but served in another state. Indeed, the name James Hales appears on muster rolls of Maryland. He first appeared in records of Knox Co., Kentucky, as a taxpayer in 1800. He was counted there in successive census reports from 1810 to 1830. The last known record of his life was the sale of land in Knox County in 1835. He appears to have died before the 1840 census. As many as 8-9 offspring have been identified. (Bio by Mark Hale)
