Longtime St. Helens resident Vera Berger Harrison, 95, who provided loving care to thousands of patients during her 45 years as a registered nurse, passed away peacefully at a family home in Florida February 10.
Her daughter Mary Anne Miles, sons Joe Berger and Jerry Berger and daughter-in-law Annette Berger were with her when she died after battling cancer.
Mrs. Harrison was born on Sept. 21, 1916, in Prentiss County, Mississippi. She attended nursing school and worked as an operating room and emergency room nurse in Laurel, Mississippi, where she met her future husband, Leonard Berger.
The couple married in 1938 and had three children. They moved to St. Helens in 1945, where the devoted mother and RN worked for three decades as office nurse for Dr. Zeschin.
After Leonard died in 1976, she married her second love, Theodore Harrison of St. Helens, who also preceded her in death.
As a livewire retiree, Mrs. Harrison split her time between Oregon and Florida. She loved the water on both coasts, and was an avid fisherman, beachcomber, bird-watcher and baker. She enjoyed spending time with dear friends at the St. Helens Senior Center and making craft items to help support the center. She also was a loyal member of the Daughters of the Nile and the Women of the Moose.
Besides her children and daughter-in-law, she is survived by a sister, Bernice Lenich, a grandson, Douglas Berger, granddaughters Erin Berlanga and Sarah Nichols and two great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, February 20, at Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens.
The family suggests, donations be made in her name to Treasure Coast Hospice, 1201 S.E. Indian Street, Stuart, FL 34997.
