LAVALE,MARYLAND -- Leo Ray Fleegle, 95, formerly of LaVale, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.

Born Aug. 26, 1916 in Corriganville, he was the son of the late Vonder Schmidt Fleegle and Esther Elizabeth (Geiger) Fleegle Paetow. He was the step-son of the late Frank Paetow.

Mr. Fleegle was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Evelyn Viola (Bootman) Fleegle; and one brother, Vincent Fleegle.

Mr. Fleegle was a World War II veteran, having served in Battery C, 57th. Coast Guard Artillery. He was one of the first 28 Marylanders to be honorably discharged on May 12, 1945 at Fort George G. Meade.

After serving in the Pacific Arena, Mr. Fleegle returned to Corriganville and worked on the Western Maryland Railroad as a Boiler Maker's Mechanic until 1952, when diesels replaced steam powered engines. The family relocated to Baltimore where he joined the Heat and Frost Insulator's & Asbestos Local 11, which later became Local 24. On January 19, 2012 the Union visited Leo and presented him with his 75 Years of Service pin and a plaque honoring him as oldest living member of the union.

Survivors include his devoted daughter, Sheila R. Fleegle Evans and husband Jack, Fort Valley, Va.; adored granddaughter, Christa Rae Lambdin, Fulks Run, Va.; step-granddaughter, Jacqueline Cherie and her children Lauren Ashley Elizabeth Lee and Spencer Erickson Lee; one brother, Allen "Allie" Fleegle, Corriganville; two sisters, Kathleen DePew, Corriganville, and Helen Morgan, Pella, Iowa; and dear nieces and nephews. He was blessed to have helpful and caring neighbors, Tom Woods and and his late wife, Shirley, who were always watchful to cheerfully attend to whatever assistance he needed. Special appreciation for Evelyn Burkett who checked on him daily for two months prior to his move to Charlotte Hall.

The family would like thank the Charlotte Hall Veteran's Home Staff for their loving care while "Pappy" was with them and for keeping us up to date. Also, "Thank You" St. Mary's County Hospice who turned "Pappy" around when he was failing last year, so well that he no longer needed their care. However, there are two very special Volunteer Hospice Visitors, that continued to visit him on their time, Toni and Brad Vargo, who would read him the Cumberland Times News Sports pages and talk about baseball! They gave him great joy! Thank you, one and all for your extraordinary love and care.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 from 10 a.m. until noon. The funeral service will follow at noon, with the Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard at the funeral home.

There will be a private interment at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
