John Carroll Gunn, born May 13, 1816 in Old Cairo, Sumner County, TN, was the son of John Gunn born in NC and Elizabeth Carroll born in NC. His grandparents were Daniel Mark Gunn and Jerusha Winn, Robert Carroll and Sarah Bruce. His full siblings were Martha Gunn b. 1812 who married Joshua D Gardner, and William Carroll Gunn b. 1814. John Carroll Gunn's father died when he was very young, and Elizabeth Carroll remarried William Hubbard in TN and had six more children with him. In her old age she moved to Illinois (before 1860), died September 25, 1875 in Woodlawn, Jefferson, IL.
John Carroll Gunn was an attorney, as was his son John Henry Gunn. His son Daniel Gunn was also an attorney but did not practice.

He then married a widow, Mrs. Temperance R. (Modgelin) Bryant on September 22, 1892 in Jefferson County, IL. She survived him.
