Virginia L. (Ginny) Thompson, 82, of Fairmont, died Monday (April 2, 2001) at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born July 25, 1918, in Fairmont, the daughter of the late Warren and Beulah Hartley Cunningham. She was the chairman of the board of General Delivery Inc., a trucking company founded by her late husband Walter "Pete" Thompson in 1948. She was also past president of the West Virginia Motor Truck Association, a position she was especially proud. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church. Her hobbies were boating and amateur radio. WB8CPK was her call sign. She also had raced stock cars and sold Harley Davidson motorcycles in the 1950s. She was associated with the Fraternal Order of Police for many years.
She is survived by a son, James C. "Chip" Thompson of Fairmont; two granddaughters, Marci L. Thompson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Andrea K. Chambers of Parsons; one great-granddaughter, Erika Taylor Poling; and a brother-in-law, Tom Hanes of Fairmont. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Hanes.
No funeral is planned, but a memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church, 3rd Street and Gaston Avenue, Fairmont, with the Rev. David H. Rockwood officiating.
