Lynn Callaway, 83, of Dunwoody and formerly of Worcester, MA and Cape Cod, died July 13, 2003. She was vivacious, outgoing, warm, witty, and full of life. A strikingly beautiful blond coed at Stoneleigh College in Maine, she caught the eye of John Callaway when he was a West Point Cadet. He proposed to her one week after he returned from a WWII tour in the South Pacific in 1944. As a devoted United States Army wife, she was a support to soldiers, other military wives, and their families through tours of duty in Ft. Riley, KS, Washington D.C., Newport, RI, Paris, France, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Ft. Monroe, VA, and Ft. McPherson in Atlanta where Colonel Callaway retired as Post Commander in 1971. Entertaining military dignitaries and family, she was a charming and gracious hostess, a gourmet cook, and an expert with floral arrangements. She loved French culture, spoke fluent French, and cherished the years in Paris when Col. Callaway was a military attache' with the American Embassy. During the years in Paris, the family lived in three historic regions, one near the Arc de Triomph, one between the Louvre and the Paris Opera House, and finally at Neuilly. She loved watching her sons sail wooden boats in the fountains at the Tuilleries Gardens. She single handedly took care of the family when Col. Callaway was away for two separate twelve-month military hardship tours. In all the different settings in which she lived, Mrs. Callaway created beautiful homes with antiques from her travels around the world, homes full of love and generosity. Mrs. Callaway is survived by her loving family including her husband of almost 60 years, Col. John Callaway (ret.), sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. Frank Fielding and Mrs. Suzanne Stotts Callaway, Dr. John Wilson and Dr. Katherine Burge Callaway; grandchildren, Mrs. Jennifer Callaway Garlow, Mr. John Elliott Callaway, Mr. Chris Callaway, Miss Mary Katherine Callaway, Miss Christina Callaway, Mr. Taylor Callaway, Miss Elizabeth Callaway; grandson-in-law, Mr. Robert Garlow; great grandsons, Zach and Austin Garlow; sister, Mrs. Virginia Sohlstrom McPherson; and Mrs. Iris Whitten Callaway.
