The funeral of Mrs. Alvarizo Higgins, who died at the home of her son, Dr. F. A. Higgins, Wednesday morning, Oct. 24th, was held Friday morning from the M. E. church in this village, Rev. J. J. Gelling officiating, with interment in the Greenbush cemetery. The M. E. choir furnished the music for the services. The bearers of the casket were Messrs. Eph. Conger, t. H. Thackray, R. D. Stannard and Chas Roberts. Undertaker M. Mann of Glenbeulah conducted the funeral.
Elizabeth Prentice was born in Oxford, Chenango Co. N.Y. October 30, 1829 and when three years old went to Hamburg, Erie County, a suburb of Buffalo, with her parents where she lived until her marriage to Elijah G. Ward in 1847 and they came to Wisconsin in 1848, locating at Dotyville, Town of Forest, Fond du Lac County. Mr. Ward was a soldier in the Civil War, being with Sherman in Georgia, where he died in 1864.
On Oct. 11th 1867, Mrs. Ward was married to Alvarizo Higgins and they resided on a farm in Forest for twelve years. They moved to Greenbush in 1879, where Mr. Higgins passed away on Oct. 13, 1897. Two years later Mrs. Higgins went to Chadron, Neb., where she made her home with her son Frank and family for seven years, when she went to Clear Lake, Polk County and lived there for four years with her son C. W. Ward and his family, while her son Frank attended a veterinary college in Chicago. After the latter had completed his course he located in Plymouth and his mother made her home with him.
In 1912 they moved to Greenbush. Mrs. Higgins was the oldest person in the village of Greenbush, being a pioneer resident of Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Counties and was thus abel to relate many interesting happenings of the early days. She was s great reader and was deeply interested in current events. Mrs. Higgins had been a member of the M. E. church since the age of fourteen years. She had been in a feeble condition for a long time and for the past five months slowly failed until the end came.
Four sons and one daughter survive her, A. F. Ward of Fond du Lac; C. W. Ward, Clear Lake; H. E. Ward, Yearington, Nev.; Dr. F. A. Higgins of this place and Mrs. George Higgins of Fond du Lac, also 25 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
