Lavinia Ellen Irwin was born in Post Oak, Johnson County, Missouri. Her parents were originally from Tennessee.

During the Civil War her brothers and brother-in-laws, future husband, and cousins were all caught up on opposing sides in the conflict, and one of her brothers died as a Confederate prisoner of war at Camp Morton, Indiana.

Lavinia Ellen married William Joel Butler, on May 2, 1867, in Johnson County, Missouri. He was a native-born Missourian like herself, a carpenter by trade, and a Confederate veteran ("4th Sergeant") of Company C of the 2nd Missouri Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (Provisional Confederate States Army). All six of their children were born in Missouri prior to 1878.

By 1880 the Butlers were living in Castroville, Monterey County, California. In 1888 the family was living in San Diego.

A widow living with one of her daughters, Lavinia passed away in San Diego, CA, on February 26, 1934 at the age of 90.
