Johann Bernard Carl Borgmann was born on 15 August 1838 at Johannes Wenstrup Leibzucht (rental house) at Nellinghof, Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. His parents were Johann Heinrich Borgmann and Maria Elisabetha Wenstrup. In 1856, John B. Borgmann immigrated to America. On 11 July 1861, he joined Company B, 27th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. John B. Borgmann musterd in at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio. In late November 1861, while at Lexington, Missouri, due to a lack of tents and overcoats, he suffered a terrible head cold and constant ringing in his ears thus rendering him partially deaf. He consulted the commpany doctor. The doctor said the only thing he could do was to give him a discharge. John B. Borgmann did not want to leave the army so he became a cook. On 4 October 1862, John B. Borgmann was listed as missing at the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi. On 22 July 1864, at the Siege of Atlanta, he was shot in the thigh. John B. was discharged from the Union Army on 27 September 1864. On 28 February 1878, John B. Borgmann married Anna F. Toschlag at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA. On 18 September 1913, John B. Borgmann died at his residence in Cincinnati, Ohio from gangrene of the left foot and leg and arteriosclerosis. He was buried on 21 September 1913 at Saint Mary Cemetery, Saint Bernard, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA.
