The Anthon Herald, 5 April 1944, page 1: William Isaac Hinds, the only son of Ebenezer and Maria Hinds, was born June 5, 1858, at Bridgewater, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania, and passed away Monday, April 3, 1944, aged 85 years, 5 months and 29 days. He was recovering from a major operation performed about 6 weeks ago, when he suddenly suffered a relapse and developed pneumonia, which caused his death at 2:30 p.m. Monday in St. Vincent's Hospital in Sioux City. He married Sarah Dayton at Wolf Dale, Woodbury Co., Iowa, on June 13, 1878. This union was blessed with four children. Two children survive: Mrs. Mary Lambert of Anthon who has cared for him in his declining years, and Isaac of Harvard, Nebraska, plus seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. His wife Sarah passed away January 23, 1922, and two sons, Harris and John preceded him in death, Harris died in Kimball, South Dakota, October 14, 1920, and John died at Sioux City November 2, 1933. William Hinds came to Jackson Co., Iowa, with his parents at the age of five years. Later the family moved further west to the Little Sioux Valley, arriving in Oto May 3, 1868. The family stayed there during the summer while the homestead three miles northwest of Anthon was laid out and a cabin built. They occupied the homestead that fall and Mr. Hinds resided there continuously until his retirement several years ago. In 1884 he purchased the homestead from his father, who returned to Pennsylvania. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in the Anthon Methodist Church with Rev. A. Pruitt of Smithland officiating, assisted y Rev. C. B. Wittstruck, the pastor. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, under direction of Hudgel Funeral Home.
