Mrs. Martha M.Lowry, a daughter of ColonelI C. Pugh one of the makers of Decatur history died in her home, on N. Main at 9 oclock Wednesday morning of the infirmities of age. She was one of the oldest resident of Decatur and was in years of membership the oldest member of the First Methodist church.

She was 82 years old at the time of her death and she joined the church when she was 12 years old. Her maiden name was Martha M. Pugh. She was born in Vandalia, June 4,1832. Her mother went to Vandalia to stay with relatives during the absence of Col.Pugh who was participating in the Black Hawk war and Mrs. Lowery was born. Her parents returned to Decatur after the war and She had lived in this city since that time.

She was married to J. M. Lowry of Decatur on Feb. 1, 1852. He was a justice of the peace in this city and was holding that office when he died in 1887. She was very interested in Decatur and the progress of it and she kept well informed. When she was unable to read her children and friends would read the papers to her daily She was well educated having attended schools in Decatur and later the Presbyterian Seminary in Jacksonville.

She was the oldest of 15 children, twelve of whom are dead. She leaves four children,Mrs. E. E.Vance of Decatur,W.L.Lowry of Springfield, Miss Mary A. Lowry and Silas T. Lowry of Decatur. She leaves a brother, J. H.Pugh of Spokane,Wash. and two sisters, Mrs. Belle Gillham of Fort Scott, Kan. and Mrs. Almira Mark of Washington , D. C.

The funeral will be in the First Methodist church at 4 oclock Friday with burial in Greenwood cemetery.
