He was born on Sept. 21, 1915, in Berlin, Okla., to Dave and Violet Laxton Lay.
He married Ora Blackburn on Dec. 4, 1936, in Berlin. He moved to Melrose in 1949 from California. He farmed and ranched all his life. He loved to hunt and to travel with his wife. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Melrose, where he taught Sunday school for more than 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Eugene Lay; a brother, Elisha Lay; a sister, Eunice Plummer; and a great-grandson, Logan Lay
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Violet Widner (and husband, Harvey) of Duncanville, Texas; three sons, Curtis Lay Jr. of Lubbock, Johnny Lay (Genita) and Jim Lay (Donna), all of Melrose; a sister, Jane Stephens of Elk City, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Joe Bunce will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Melrose Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mike, Jeff and Todd Widner and Ritchie, Josh, Caleb, Jared, Jeremiah and Levi Lay.
Honorary pallbearers are Leslie Lay Riley, Lisa Avent, Joni Elliott, Laney Pierce and Liberty Sobey.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Melrose or the Baptist Children’s Home in Portales.
