Paradise Resident Claimed by Death
Funeral services were held at he Nugent Funeral Home in Chico on Wednesday, June 24, for William D Brown, Paradise resident. Bill, as he was known to his many friends had been sick for several months and passed away on Sunday, June 21 in Oroville.
He and his twin brother, Charles, more familiarly known as Charlie, were born in Michigan on January 10, 1865. Bill was a special guard at the World's Fair held in Chicago in 1893. Following the fair, he came to California, for some time running the Elk Horn Service station at Clear Lake Highlands, Lake county. He moved to Paradise about 1905 where he operated a hotel which was located on the present Burce Corner opposite the Gulick building. Previous to his coming to Paradise, he managed the Chico Transfer Company during the time the Diamond Match Company was buing built in Chico. Ten years ago he purchased a stock ranch located near Carson City, Nevada, where one of his sons is now. Four years ago he returned to Paradise, due to ill health and had lived here until the time of his death. He was a prominent member of the Odd Fellows, being in the I.O.O.F. Lodge in Susanville, the Encampment and the Canton, at Hayward, California, and the Rebekah Lodge at Hayward. Bill was known as a great collector, not of just one thing, but of many and during his lifetime he collected thousands of interesting articles.
He is survived by four children, Mrs Mabel Smith and Mrs Murley Mathews of San Leandro, Leonard Brown of Gaton Rouge, Louisiana, and George Brown, Carson City Nevada. Two brothers, R.M. Brown and Charles, his twin, both of Paradise, also survive.
Rev. W.H.L. Marshall of the Craig Memorial Congregational Church officiated at the services. Burial followed ih the family plot in the Evergreen Cemetery, Oakland.
