Major League Baseball Player, Coach. A third baseman by trade, Morgan was signed by the Chicago Cubs as an amateur free agent in 1948 out of the University of Richmond. The Cubs sent him to their minor league club at Selma, AL. where he steadily progressed along the minor league level. Drafted by the the St. Louis Browns on December 3, 1951 in the minor league draft, his career was interrupted by two years of service during the Korean War. During the 1954 season his contract was purchased by the Cubs from the Orioles, (St. Louis had moved to Baltimore after the 1953 season). His career in the majors was brief, as he appeared in 31 games total over parts of two seasons, 1954 and 1955. Lifetime he accrued a .225 average with 3 RBI in 71 AB's. In the minors he made stops with Macon, Nashville, Des Moines, Springfield (MA), Chattanooga, Los Angeles and Charlotte. He later managed in the minors with Fort Walton Beach, Bismarck-Mandan and Wilson. In the 1960s he joined the Twins organization, joining their coaching staff in 1969. He remained in Minnesota until September of 1975 when illness forced him to quit. Suffering from kidney disease, he underwent a transplant in the fall of 1975. He passed away November 8, 1975, as a result of surgery complications after his body rejected an initial kidney transplant. He was only 47 years old.
