Johannes H Sauvage arrived in America aboard the ship "Winter Galley" on May 9 1738 and settled in Berks County. He purchased the land where this graveyard is located on March 1743. He died in Feb 1761, signing his German will Johannass Sowas, an Americanized version of Sauvage. The name evolved to Sowash and later Soash as families moved west. Johannes was almost certainly buried in the graveyard on the property. The graveyard was vacated in 1865.

There were two children named in his will: Heinrich and his sister Anna Elizabetha. Johnnes must have had another son as he had a grandson Joseph Savage (Find A Grave #55037974) who remained in Berks County and retained the "Sauvage/Savage" name. All other known descendants moved on to Westmoreland County, PA., and changed the name to Sowash or Soash.

Information on Johannes Sauvage can be found at http://www.soash.org/soash.htm

There have been many people copying information on Ancestry.com that has his parents as Jean and Jeanne (Peralt) Sauvage. I have researched the original records thoroughly and do not believe it to be accurate because:

1) Jean & Jeanne Sauvage lived in Plelan Le Grand, Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France, on the northwestern coast. Because Johannes H Sauvage spoke German, he was probably born and lived in northeastern France (Alsace) or western Germany. Nearly all of the passengers on the immigration ship 'Winter Galley" were German from the Palatinate.

2) Jean & Jeanne Sauvage were Catholic. From the time Johannes arrived in America, he was a member of the Reformed Church. Brittany was not a safe place for Protestants after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.

3) I checked out the records in Plelan Le Grand, and there are no birth records for Johannes in 1698. They had a son Jan, born 16th October, 1700. There is no marriage record where he married Susanna. Jean and Jeanne were married 15th July 1698.

The only source for Johannes H. Sauvage's birth year is the passenger list which lists him as age 40 upon his arrival in Philadelphia in 1738.

It seems someone just found a Jean Sauvage in France out of thousands and made this erroneous connection.
