Our father, grandfather and friend, Ronald Rex Dalley, age 96, passed away from causes attendant to age in Sandy, Utah, February 8, 2012 surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. Rex was born August 2, 1915 in Teasdale, Utah to Ronald Jones and Margery Mutch Hiskey Dalley.
As a boy, Rex learned to work in the fields on the family farm, drive teams, and enjoyed hours of fishing, hunting and riding in the mountains of Wayne County. He was the oldest of six children. Rex's love for Teasdale and Wayne County remained through his entire life.
Rex attended Branch Agricultural College (BAC) in Cedar City, Utah, and graduated from Utah State Agricultural College in 1937. His degree was in Vocational Agricultural Education. Rex always had a love for education and learning.
Rex's first teaching position was in Hooper, Utah. In Hooper he met his beautiful eternal companion, Velda Beasley. They were married in the Salt Lake temple on June 3, 1938.
Rex and Velda moved immediately to Hinsdale, Montana, where they lived for the next 13 years. Rex was an excellent teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent of schools in Hinsdale. Rex made many lifelong friends in Hinsdale. Rex's love for the Hinsdale community was apparent in his devoted effort to educate youth.
In 1951, Rex and Velda moved to Helena, Montana where he became the first full-time Executive Secretary of the Montana High School Association. During his time with the High School Association, Rex enjoyed coordinating all the sports, music and speech activities throughout the state. Rex continued to have a love for sporting events throughout his life.
Rex and Velda were active members of the LDS church. While in Montana, Rex served as Stake President of the Butte and Helena Stakes for 12 years and was also a Stake Patriarch. Rex was a proud American and was very active in the Republican Party. He served as President of the Helena Kiwanis club and Lieutenant Governor of the Kiwanis club for the state of Montana.
Upon retirement in 1977, Rex and Velda served a mission at the Idaho Falls Temple visitor's center. Subsequently, they moved to Midvale, Utah, and wintered in Mesa, Arizona for many years where more lifelong friends were made.
While living in Utah, Rex became an avid BYU fan and attended all football games. Rex enjoyed camping and fishing on Boulder Mountain in Wayne County and he loved socializing with family at many reunions.
After Velda's death, he lived for 8 years at Legacy Retirement Residence in South Jordan where many friendships were developed with the residents and staff.
Rex and Velda were blessed with and are survived by four children: R.J. Dalley (Tricia) of Farmington, NM; Merilyn Smith (Dee) of South Jordan, UT; Carolyn Jane Golightly (George) of Heber City, UT; Robert Dalley (Sharon) of Centerville, UT. Rex is also survived by two sisters: Iva Bringhurst of Cedar City, UT; and Mary Twitchell (Bob) of Salt Lake City, UT. Rex is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints on 2812 W. 11800 S. Friends and family may visit Friday, February 10 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Broomhead Funeral Home, 12600 S. 2200 W., Riverton, Utah and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Interment will be in the Hooper City Cemetery.
