Eleanor Sherwood Bulkley was one of 16 women from Fairfield, CT, who in 1894 founded the Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Born in Southport, CT, Miss Bulkley was the daughter of Benjamin Sherwood Bulkley and Eliza Ann Burr, granddaughter of James Bulkley and Eleanor Sherwood, and great granddaughter of Benjamin Sherwood and Anna Hull. During the Revolutionary War her great grandfather served as a corporal in 1777 in Capt. George Burr’s Company, Col. Samuel Whiting’s Regiment, of the Connecticut militia.

In 1897 Miss Bulkley married Edwin Augustus Hawkes, son of Orlando Manville Hawkes and Deborah Aurelia Hawley, and settled in Rosamond, Christian Co, IL. She had 7 children, Joseph Bulkley Hawkes, Margaret Elizabeth Peaslee, Eleanor Burr Hawkes, Walter Edwin Hawkes, Mabel Louise Hawkes Gray, James Henry Hawkes, and Mary Irene Kasch.
