Australian Prime Minister. Bruce served as the Prime Minister of Australia from February 9, 1923, to October 22, 1929. He also served as Australia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 1933 to 1946, a number of positions with the United Nations from 1947 to 1951, and as the Foundation Chancellor of the Australian National University from 1952 to 1961. Bruce later earned the title of Lord Bruce or 1st Viscount Bruce of Melbourne and Westminister in 1947. Also a veteran of World War I, Bruce received the distinguished Military Cross and Croix de Guerre Medals while wounded in France.
