Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War in the 100th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, rising from the rank of Sergeant to Colonel and commander of the regiment. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 8, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war", and was honorably mustered out of service on July 24, 1865.
