Mary was named for her aunt, Mary More Gould. She married to Philetus Reed on 11 September 1845 at Blenheim. Their early years were passed on a farm in South Gilboa, New York. In 1866, they moved permanently to Syracuse. Two sons, Oliver King Reed and Arthur Brewster Reed died in 1896; her husband in 1897. Mary never fully recovered from the grief of these losses.
