Screenwriter. He is best known for adapting Horace McCoy's 1935 novel "They Shoot Horses, Don't They" into the 1969 film. He co-authored this screenplay with Academy Award-winning writer James Poe. For their work, they were nominated for an Academy Award. The film, which was a psychological drama film, was very successful at the box office, grossing $12.6 million in the United States and Canada on a $4.86 million budget. For the 1960s television era, he wrote three episodes of "The Man From U.C.L.E," two episodes of "Mission: Impossible," and four episodes of "C.A.T." Among other credits, he wrote the notable 1974 TV movie "A Case of Rape," which held the ratings record for many years for a made-for-TV movie. Born the son of an Irish immigrant, he was a veteran of World War II.
