William Penny, a Revolutionary War soldier served from NC as Captain of a Cavalry Company attached to the army of General Horatio Gates and as a spy against the Tories under
the command of General Rutherford. By 1818, Captain Penny and his family were living
in Illinois and at the time of his death on March 15, 1821, they lived on Richland Creek.
Captain Penny is buried in the Richland Baptist Church Cemetery in Sangamon County.
October 13, 1970. The Springfield Chapter DAR dedicated a government plaque at Richland Cemetery near the intersection of Salisbury Road and Richland Road, Salisbury, Illinois, on the headstone of Revolutionary War soldier William Penny.

The Captain William Penny Chapter, NSDAR, was organized September 5, 1996
and the charter from the National Society was granted October 12, 1996. William Penny, a Revolutionary War soldier served from NC as Captain of a Cavalry Company attached to the army of General Horatio Gates and as a spy against the Tories under the command of General Rutherford. By 1818, Captain Penny and his family were living in Illinois and at the time of his death on March 15, 1821, they lived on Richland Creek.
