Mr. Claudis Swanson Ayers, 90, of 122 Brook St., Mount Airy, a carpenter, died Thursday afternoon in Northern Hospital of Surry County.

Born March 15, 1897 in Carroll County, Va., he was the son of Amos and Caroline Utt Ayers and a member of Bannertown Baptist Church.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at Moody Funeral Home.

Son of Amos Jackson Ayers (1855–1939) and Mariah Caroline Utt (1859–1937). Twin brother to George Dewey Ayers (1897–1977).

Claude enlisted in the U.S. Army for a term of one year on 4 August 1918 in Hillsville, Carroll County, Virginia. He was stationed overseas between 15 September 1918 and 24 March 1919. He later re-enlisted for another one year term on 22 December 1920. His Army service number was 4087775.

The majority of the Claude's Official Military Personnel File (OMPF) was lost 12 July 1973 due to a fire at the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC). The U.S. National Archives does maintain final pay documents for both of his enlistments.

Married Nancy Elizabeth Spencer on 4 August 1921 in Dobson, Surry County, North Carolina. The marriage was officiated by Rev. James F. Deal and witnessed by W. M. Jackson and Pearle Clifton.

Interred 28 March 1987 at age 90.
