Mrs. Bessie Gay Slate Cook, 90, of 2086 West Pine Street, Mount Airy, passed away Monday evening, November 24, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Cook was born January 28, 1918, in Patrick County, VA, to the late Joseph Edward Slate and Ada Mae Cox Slate Jones. Bessie was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and Roger Chappell of Ararat; a son, Hassell Cooke of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Greg Cooke and Randy Cooke, both of Mount Airy, and David Coalson of Dobson; two great-grandchildren, Kirby Cooke and Charlotte Cooke; and a sister, Claudia "Judy" Thompson of Dobson.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Laymon Cook; five sisters, Gladys Dunbar, Cassie Branch, Annie Slate, Eloyes Holcomb, and twin sister Essie Evans; and three brothers, Roy Slate, Coy Slate, and Herbert Slate.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Skyline Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Trent Lyons officiating. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy on Wednesday morning from 9:30 until time for the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
