Mr. Austin Harold Anderson, 87, of Mount Airy, the husband of Mrs. Ethel Pruitt Anderson, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Mr. Anderson was born in Patrick County on Jan. 14, 1916, to Joe B. and Amanda McMillian Anderson.
He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Philippine campaign. He was in the invasion of Japan, where he saw the massive damage done by the atom bomb to Nagasaki. He received the Asiatic Pacific Service Metal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and World War II Victory Metal. After returning from his duty in the armed services, he moved to Miami, Fla., where he supervised and built high-rise condominiums and hotels on Miami Beach. After retirement, he returned to Mount Airy, where he enjoyed gardening as a hobby. He was a 50-year member of Renfro Masonic Lodge AF & AM.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel Pruitt Anderson of the home; a daughter, Jo Ann Mendes of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Nancy Anderson of Miami, Fla., and Jerry and Mary Jean Anderson of Gainesville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Tina Mendes Jenkins, Lisa Anderson Kepley, Jill Blanco, Bruce Douglas Anderson Jr., Michael Mendes Jr., Jennifer Anderson and Richard Anderson; eight great-grandchildren, Katie Kepley, Anna Kepley, Will Jenkins, Austin Mendes, Molly Mendes, Nicholas Blanco, Ellie Anderson and Ryan Anderson; a special brother, Joe Bill Anderson; two brothers, James Anderson and Roy Anderson; and four sisters, Essie Bishop, Ossie Caldwell, Dorothy Setzer and Pauline Scales.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 11, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Timothy Byerly of Grace Moravian Church. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard, Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436, with Masonic Rites by Renfro Masonic Lodge. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in the name of Austin H. Anderson to the Oxford Orphanage, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.
