U S Armu WW 2, served in South Pacific, preparing for the invasion of Japan
Retired Penn State Police Officer,(Hersey,Pa) served 27 Years
Husband of late Marie McHale died 1994
Son of Anthony & Agnes (Healey) Burke

Joseph A. Burke, a longtime resident of South Scranton, died Monday morning at Mountain View Care Center after a short stay. His wife, Marie McHale Burke, died in 1994. Born in Avoca, son of the late Anthony and Agnes Healey Burke, he was a graduate of Avoca High School and the State Police Academy, Hershey. He retired from the state police after 27 years of service. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the Army in the South Pacific. He was preparing for the invasion of Japan as the war was declared over. He completed his service time stationed in Japan, where he was struck by the devastation. He very rarely shared what he saw during the war with his family, instead shared with them the beautiful geography of the islands and the customs of the inhabitants. Joe was a quiet, kind man, with a wicked sense of humor, who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. His family will never forget the patience and caring he showed his wife, their mother, during her time of illness. He will be especially missed by his faithful companion of seven years, Bandit, his Jack Russell terrier. He will also be missed deeply by Jessica, Peter, Steven, and his "pal," Melanie Rosato. The family also wishes to thank the wonderful people at Mountain View Care Center who took such wonderful care of Joe: Gerri Vaneski, Carra Reed and especially Barb Carlo, who treated Joe like a family member. Surviving are: two sons, Gerard, Scranton; and Bill, Lawrenceville, N.J; a daughter, Patty, Scranton; three grandchildren, Joseph, Nicole and Courtney; a sister, Helen Burke; several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Kit Burke Berthholf and Angela Burke Stone. The funeral will be Friday with Mass at 10 a.m. in Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard St., to be celebrated by Monsignor Michael Delaney, pastor. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery, Avoca. Friends may call Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m., in the Strauch Funeral Home, 602 Birch St. For additional information, directions or to leave an online condolence, visit www.strauchfuneralhome.com. ~Scranton (PA) Times-Tribune, Wed 18 Apr 2007
