Robert Bruce Lamon was born in Berkeley County, Virginia to John E. Lamon and Ruth Ann Chenoweth Lamon. The family moved to Vermilion County, Illinois in 1835. Robert Bruce went to California in 1850; he served as a member of the California state assembly from the 6th District from 1856 to 1857. In 1857 he returned to Danville. In the spring 1858 he was admitted to the bar. During the Civil War he was elected as judge in Vermilion County. In 1866 he moved to Paris, Illinois. He was elected judge in Edgar County in 1869. Robert Bruce was later appointed to the Interior Department by President Cleveland and served as a special advisor in land cases.
