In April 1893 Reinder Groen emigrated with his parents and siblings from the Netherlands, province Friesland, to the Platte area in the southeastern part of South Dakota, not far away from the River Missouri. They arrived on 7 April 1893 on the SS Veendam at the port of New York, Castle Garden.
