James B. Ford was born near Springfield, MO, to Joseph H. Ford and Elizabeth Jane Henderson.
His family moved around 1890 to Choska, a trading post and post office near Muskogee, Creek Nation (I.T). When James was about 13, his parents died and James and his siblings went to live with their sister, Mary Caroline Ford who had married Dave Ford of Braggs Mountain, Cherokee Nation, IT. James grew up as a farm laborer.
He married on 17 Nov 1901 in Fort Gibson, IT, Dovie M. Blythe (buried at Citizens); they had 5 children: Alford Clay (buried at Citizens), Dorothy Ford Brown, Joseph Ernest, Robert George, and James Howard Ford.
